What do people come to counselling for?

People come to counselling for a whole range of things; basically anything you want to work through with or get support from a professional. I offer a grounded, compassionate space where people can explore what’s really going on beneath the surface - without judgement, pressure, or the need to “fix” themselves.

My approach is person-centred and trauma-informed, and I have the skills and expertise to work through a wide range of issues.  However, there are some issues or situations that may be best worked through with a different or more specialised practitioner, and I will always let you know if this is the case. I have your best interests at heart, so if you're not sure if The Tough Stuff is the right place for you, book a free 15 minute consult and let's have a chat.

Sophie's Practice

In my therapeutic practice, I recognise how past experiences, relationships, and nervous system responses shape the way people think, feel, and connect. I understand that distress is not a personal failure, but often a natural response to overwhelming or unresolved experiences.

I draw on a range of evidence-based modalities, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Schema Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), integrating these in a flexible and collaborative way tailored to each client. My work is also informed by Janina Fisher’s trauma-focused parts work, helping clients develop curiosity and compassion for different parts of themselves, as well as attachment theory to support healing in relationships and within the self.

For couples, I am informed by the Gottman Method, and the work of Esther Perel, supporting partners to strengthen emotional connection, improve communication, and better understand patterns of conflict and repair.

At the heart of my work is a belief that healing happens through safety, understanding, and genuine human connection. The Tough Stuff exists to support people through complexity, pain, and growth, at a pace that feels right for them.
